A Simple Skincare Routine That Covers the Basics

The skincare aisle can be overwhelming. With endless serums, masks and ten-step routines to choose from, it is easy to spend a lot of money without knowing what actually matters. For most people, a simple routine covering the basics is more than enough.

Step 1: Cleanse

Cleansing removes dirt, oil, sunscreen and makeup built up over the day. Choose a gentle cleanser that suits your skin type and does not leave your face feeling tight or dry. Cleansing in the evening is the most important; a splash of water may be enough in the morning.

Step 2: Moisturise

A moisturiser helps keep skin hydrated and supports its natural barrier. Those with oily skin often prefer a lightweight gel formula, while drier skin may benefit from a richer cream. Apply it while your skin is still slightly damp to help lock in moisture.

Step 3: Protect

Sunscreen is widely regarded as one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply when spending extended time outdoors.

Add products slowly

Once your basic routine is established, you can introduce extra products if you have specific concerns. Add one new product at a time and give it a few weeks before judging the results. Introducing several at once makes it hard to tell what is working or what might be causing irritation.

Keep it consistent

A simple routine followed every day will usually deliver better results than an elaborate one used occasionally. Healthy habits such as staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and removing makeup before bed also make a difference.

If you have persistent concerns such as acne, sensitivity or unusual changes in your skin, it is worth speaking with a GP or dermatologist for personalised advice.
